Group trips

From 10 persons

The advantages of group trips (from 10 persons) by public transport are obvious: You spend an enjoyable time and an entertaining journey to-gether with your school class, your club, your friends or your company.

The price calculation for trips by train and bus within the OSTWIND fare network is easy with the zone fare and can be accomplished by your-self. The points of sale are gladly available to assist you in the organisa-tion of your group trip.

Registration or booking of a group trips

Register your group trips as early as possible. Timely registration (at least 2 working days before departure) is a prerequisite for sufficient transport capacity. In buses and S-Bahn no seat reservations can be made. However, group trips should be reported free of charge to a point of sale or the respective transport company so that the transport can be guaranteed. Book your group trip at every serviced point of sale. Alter-natively, you can receive a detailed offer for your group trip online at sbb.ch/gruppen. You can also book your group trip around the clock by calling Rail Service on 0848 44 66 88 (CHF 0.08/min.).

Re-booking and cancellation

Is your group trip not taking place as planned? Please inform the point of sale about the change, postponement or cancellation by 11 am at latest on the day before your trip. In case of cancellation of a registered group trip (cancellation before departure), a processing fee of CHF 30.00 will be charged.

Discounts

Groups of at least 10 people travelling together are entitled to the follow-ing discounts compared to the normal fare:

Adults 20%
Children up to 16 years and adults with Half Fare card 60%
Every 10th person travels free of charge.

Short-trip group tickets

These tickets are ideal for single trips or for partial trips on various routes. The validity period depends on the number of selected zones.

Application example

A J+S group with 25 children aged 12 years and 3 adult companions (2 of them with Half Fare card) travel from St.Gallen via Gais to Appenzell, visit the village, take a hike and drive from Gonten via Urnäsch-Herisau back to St.Gallen.

Price calculation

Two short trip group tickets are required for this travel:

Trip section 1: St.Gallen-Gais-Appenzell = 4 zones (CHF 4.00 for Half Fare and children)

Trip section 2: Gonten-Herisau-St.Gallen = 6 zones (CHF 5.80 for Half Fare and children)

Price calculation 2nd class

  • 25 children x CHF 4.00 = CHF 100.00
  • 1 adult at discounted rate x CHF 4.00 = CHF 4.00
  • 25 children x CHF 5.80 = CHF 145.00
  • 1 adult at discounted rate x CHF 5.80 = CHF 5.80
  • 2 adults travel free of charge = CHF 0.00
  • Total price: CHF 254.80

Tickets

For each trip section the tour guide receives a ticket for the entire travel group

Tip: For longer partial trips or more than 2 partial trips, the day ticket may be valid for all zones at a lower price.

Group ticket day passes

These tickets are ideal for return journeys via the same route or the same zone combination.

Application example

A school class with 25 children aged 12 years and 3 adult companions (2 of them with Half Fare card) travels from St.Gallen via Herisau-Wattwil to Rapperswil and visits the children's zoo. In the evening the group is travelling back along the same way.

Price calculation

For the trip a day pass for 11 zones (= CHF 21.00 with Half Fare and children) is required.

Tip: The day pass is valid for all zones as of a purchase of 13 zones

  • 25 children x CHF 21.00 = CHF 525.00
  • 1 adult at discounted rate x CHF 21.00 = CHF 21.00
  • 2 adults travel free of charge = CHF 0.00

Special provisions

...for accompanied groups of children under the age of 6

Accompanied children under 6 years travel free of charge, regardless of whether they are accompanied by private persons or whether they are travelling with a day care centre. Adults and adolescents from 16 years may take along up to 8 children under 6 years free of charge. If the ac-companying function is transmitted to children, the following rule applies: Children from 12 years may take along up to 4 children under 6 years free of charge.

... for group passes from schools and adolescents

The discount for children up to 16 years is also valid for participants up to 25 years in case of:

  • pupils in classes of the mandatory 9th grade, in public or private middle schools
  • pupils of schools for deaf, blind, visually impaired persons
  • pupils of higher faculties and universities
  • Groups with young people living in homes for disabled, orphanages, ed-ucational homes etc.
  • Participants of "Jugend+Sport" events (with stamp of the J+S office) 

To take advantage of the discount for schools and youth groups, an order form signed and stamped by the school rectorate or the cantonal office "Jugend + Sport" or the Swiss Federal College of Sports in Mag-glingen (EHSM) is required.

... to acchieve the minimum amount of passengers and for free travels

All passengers who have a general subscription (GS) are fully credited for achieving the minimum number of participants and for granting free rides. Children under 6 years also count for the group minimum number. Persons with day passes, children's day passes or Gleis 7 subscrip-tions are not counted. The family discount (junior and children's take-along ticket) is granted, but children travelling free of charge are not in-cluded in the minimum number of participants and in the calculation of free rides.
